  Cobra 75WXST CB Installation

Due to the limited mounting options inside the H3 cabin, I decided to go with the Cobra 75WXST.  This way I could hide the control unit out of the way and only attach the mic when it was needed.  I paired this with a 2' Firestik tuneable antenna and Ram pickup mount kit, which included the antenna mount and 18' of Fireflex coax.

I wanted to include a foldover mount so I could lower the antenna when not in use or when on a trail with low overhangs.  I also didn't want to have to get out everytime I need to drop/raise the antenna.  There is an existing screw hole for the roof trim that is right above the driver's side window that was perfect.

I ran the coax down behind the A-pillar trim and behind the quarter panel. I had to clip the A-pillar trim a little so it would sit flat with the cable running through.

I then ran the coax under the drivers side, through an existing hole in the inside of the rocker panel, and up through an existing hole in the door sill.  I used an existing grommet in the rocker panel to plug the hole.

To power the unit, I tapped into an existing aux. line (Aux. B+) and ground under the dash on the driver's side. It is not switched so the CB can work without the key in the ignition.

I mounted the remote unit inside the center console and tucked the excess coax underneath the center trim. The pigtail for the mic fits through a gap in the console and hangs out the passenger side.

With the console put back together, the remote unit is completely hidden. I just connect the mic to the pigtail when I head out on the trails.

The antenna is easily reached out the driver's window and with the foldover mount can be folded down if the trail has low overhangs.  Lowering the antenna also helps to reduce wind noise when on the road.

With the antenna in the upright position, it has 100% coverage in all directions for the best reception.

REVIEW:

The CB unit itself is great and I would recommend it for anyone when space is an issue.  I have used it several times out on the trails and have never had a problem.  I did purchase an SWR tuner and tuned the antenna during the install.  Check out Firestek's website for more info on tuning.

I'm probably going to look at remounting the antenna at some point.  This setup does work great, but doesn't look as nice as I had hoped.
