Bay Area Hummer Happening - September 2006 |
This was a two day event at Hollister Hills SVRA put on by some of the Bay Area
Hummer dealers. They broke the two days up into four sessions, with a morning
and afternoon session each day. I signed up for the Saturday morning session.
The day started at Area 5 where we checked in and got our free gear. They had
several booths set up in the staging area including a massage booth, face
painting, and a big tent setup with a breakfast buffet. There was also an area
setup where you could have your steps removed. Brian from the NorCal Hummer
Group was also setting up a booth and had his H1 with him. I went over and
chatted with him and checked out the photos from their latest trip to Deer
Valley.
So after some breakfast and a quick introduction by the trail leaders, we were
ready to head out. They broke us up into two groups, one for the moderate run,
and the other for a more difficult run. I went with the more difficult group.
Unfortunately, I was one of only two H3's in that group and the other was a
dealer demo. Altogether, there were probably about 15 trucks in our group.
We hit the trails, heading up past Sycamore Camp to the base of Five Fingers
Hill Climb (which was closed). We turned right and followed a small creek bed,
went up the Jungle Trail and looped back around to McCray Road.
From there we took Bonanza Gulch Road to the ravine at the bottom of
Truck Hill. This is always a great spot to pose for some
pics with a wheel in the air. So as the guides led each
truck through, everyone else gathered around to watch and
take pics. One of the dealer demos in an H1 decided he
wanted to head up Truck Hill, so off he went. Not to be
outdone, the demo H3 followed him up, then turned around and
headed back down. The guides led the rest of us up the Truck
Hill return trail, down a couple other trails, and then eventually
back down to the day use area. We stopped for one more
photo op where we all got some serious air, then headed back to Area 5.
Overall, I had a great time and appreciate that the dealers put on these events
for the owners. My only complaint was that I wish it had been a full day run.
There's just too much to do in Hollister to try to fit it into 3-4 hours.Related info:
